Avoiding him doesn’t really make me feel better; if anything, it makes me feel worse. I thought it was the right move, but now I just want to be closer to him. Sometimes, I get the sense that he’s avoiding me too, and thinking about it stings my heart a bit.

To get through the day, I have to pep talk myself a lot. My supervisor noticed I wasn’t my usual cheerful self and asked if I was sick. It wasn’t just her – Megan and a front desk agent also picked up on it. “You looked down today, are you okay?” they’d ask. They’re used to me being upbeat, so any change stands out.

I’d brush it off, saying I’m just tired and need more sleep. “A cup of coffee, and I’ll be fine,” I’d add. But inside, I’d tell myself, You’re not allowed to be sad, Lindsey Althea. It’s too obvious. So get yourself together. It’s like a silent battle between how I feel and what everyone expects.

MEGAN

On another note, I couldn’t help but notice Megan returning to her usual self in the past few days. “You guys got back together?” I asked her outright. It turns out, they are giving it another shot, but this time, they’re taking baby steps. I marveled at her strength and bravery in welcoming him back into her life. Personally, I don’t think I could accept being an option, but everyone’s different. Who am I to judge? She must have her reasons, and love, perhaps, plays a significant role. I hope this time around brings them the sweetness they deserve; they do say love is sweeter the second time around.

I’m proud of her. She’s navigating this cautiously, taking it slow, and turning to prayer for guidance. It might be the answer they need to rediscover each other and learn from their past experiences. On the flip side, it could also be a test to determine if being together again is truly worthwhile. Ultimately, the decision rests with them, and I’m here to offer my support, no matter what.

Wait, this realization sinks in – there won’t be a Bryan and Megan, but there won’t be a Bryan and Lindsey either, anyways.

One time, she asked me what if Bryan confronted you? If he confesses to you? What would you do? I was left pondering. After all, I had never thought about it, at first, because I didn’t think that would ever happen. Looking at his personality, there’s no chance he would ever done that. Secondly, if he knows me and my status, I know for sure, he won’t do it. And thirdly, I am not even sure if he sees me that way. I set my mind, that I was the only one looking and admiring him from afar.

“I would be glad to talk things out with him” I answered. I think it would be a beautiful conversation if ever he had something for me as well. It would be flattering to know if he feels the same. Yet, I had the feeling, if we ever talked things out, the ending is still the same.

ELENA

Elena and I share more than just the lively facade we put on at work; we’re kindred spirits who can see through each other’s masks. Despite our efforts to show up to work with smiles, we both know when something’s amiss. It’s a silent understanding we have.

One day, after a tense encounter with Derek, I felt a rush of past traumas. His behavior towards me triggered memories I thought I’d overcome. Back at work, Elena sensed my shift in vibe, even though I tried to mask it with a forced smile. Eventually, I confided in her, revealing the weight of my past. In response, Elena showered me with compliments, insisting that the Lord sent me into her life, along with Megan and Gabriela. She made it a point never to look down on myself. And reminded me that she look up to me.

While their kind words touched my heart, I always reminded Elena that the transformation wasn’t solely me but a work of God within. I remember the advice my godfather, who is a pastor gave me since young, praises are like perfume, pleasant to the nose, but potentially poisonous if swallowed.

Grateful for the inspiration I provide, I remain vigilant not to let it consume me, acknowledging that it is God who has taken me to unimaginable heights.

Also, we both shared craziness. I love that about Elena. There was a time when Elena accompanied me to the bathroom. Observing Bryan’s gaze, she exclaimed, “Did you see that? It’s my first time seeing him look at you that way.” Confused, I inquired, “What do you mean? What kind of look?” Elena chimed in, “Girl, he looked at you from head to toe, but it was with respect. It’s like he looks up to you.”

With Megan present as well, I blurted out, “But girl, I don’t want him to respect me.” Their eyes shot me a strange and suspicious look. A brief, awkward silence hung in the air until we all burst into laughter. Me and my thoughts, huh? I had to clarify that it wasn’t what they were thinking. What I meant was, if he truly had that level of respect for me, why didn’t he just talk to me like normal friends do? Sometimes, the tangled threads of my thoughts lead to amusing misunderstandings. The laughter lasts a few minutes. It’s wonderful to have a supportive group of people in your life who can appreciate and embrace your craziness.

She even suggested Bryan and I should go somewhere, grab a meal or coffee, and chat – just be friends. I responded, “Girl, are you hearing yourself? I’m married. I don’t think it’s appropriate.” But, to be honest, the idea did excite me for a moment. But I know he would never do that.

But Elena, sweet and sincere, often marvels at my goodness. I don’t know what she sees in me, but I redirect the credit to my GOD. Our conversations delve into the profound aspects of life, sharing experiences and lessons. She opens up about her past, acknowledging mistakes, and I reassure her that her history doesn’t define her. In our talks, I extend prayers for her courage and strength as she continues her journey, grateful for the connection that goes beyond workplace friendship.

GABRIELA

It’s great to see my baby, the youngest in the group, Gabriela, thriving in her school commitments. Despite her strong personality, she carries a beautiful heart. There was a time when we shared the same work shift and one evening, we found ourselves engrossed in a discussion with differing views. I presented my perspective, and she articulated her strong stance. As her departure approached, she turned to me and asked, “Althea, we’re good, right?” I understood she was referring to our earlier debate, and I assured her that, of course, we were. I appreciated that we could hold opposing opinions yet remain friends.

Before leaving, she confided, “You know that I look up to you, right?” It was a touching acknowledgment, and I felt grateful for our bond.

Expressing the joy in our friendship, I told Gabriela that I cherished our ability to engage in debates and discussions with differing views while maintaining our bond as friends. It’s a quality I value – the freedom for her to express herself without hesitation, knowing that our friendship remains unshaken, regardless of differing opinions. Creating a space where she feels comfortable being herself and sharing her thoughts openly, is something I strive for in our friendship. In the tapestry of our connection, the threads of mutual respect and understanding blend a beautiful pattern that celebrates our differences rather than letting them divide us.

ONE AFTERNOON…

One afternoon at work, while alone, I found myself silently praying about my feelings. Despite Bryan not actively seeking a closer connection, I couldn’t shake this sense of attachment. I asked God to simply take away these emotions and guide me to focus on His will. Building strong friendships with my colleagues, which was an answered prayer, became a source of fulfillment. My desire is to be a blessing to them and anyone I encounter. I aim to live out my purpose, believing that we are created by God and for God. So, I remain open to His purpose in my life, ready to live it out.

I chose not to dwell on my feelings towards Bryan and simply seek God with this. While praying, I have these words popping in my head repeatedly. And I am confused if it’s my thoughts or God speaking to me. I couldn’t figure that out clearly. The voice is telling me to tell these words to someone:

• ‘When the time is right, I, the Lord will make it happen.’
• Don’t feel less about yourself. I have created you wonderfully.
• I have given you gifts and talents, I want you to use them for my glory.

I want you to tell Bryan these. ‘Are these my thoughts or is this yours, Lord? Well, I don’t want to do anything. I am not going there to tell him. Me and my stubbornness.‘Lindsey, these are your thoughts. Stop overthinking. Let’s just ignore these.’ I tell myself.

I kept hearing these thoughts and a voice, so I made a deal with God. I prayed, “If this is really you talking to me, God, give me a confirmation. Let Bryan come over here, and I’ll bravely tell him.” I know Bryan doesn’t usually come to the store, so part of me thinks it’s just my own thoughts. But the words are so consistent and clear that I started to doubt and believe it might be God speaking to me. To be sure, I wrote everything down on paper with the time and date. If Bryan comes today, I’ll just show him what I wrote.

Gabriela arrived, and we had a chat. I didn’t mention the voice I was hearing, but I told her, “Hey, I have a feeling Bryan might come to buy something here today.” She seemed surprised and said, “Really? He rarely comes here.”

As Bryan passed by and paused at the door, my heart raced. When he opened the door, I thought, ‘Okay, Lord, I have to obey.’ My heart was pounding, and I wondered how I would tell him. As I finished cashing him out, I mustered the courage. I blurted out, “Bryan, this is a bit strange, but I feel like God wants you to know something.” I grabbed the stapled paper and opened it, explaining that during my afternoon prayer, I felt that God wanted to tell him these words. I admitted I didn’t know what he was going through, but I was certain that God wanted him to be reassured and affirmed in whatever challenges he might be facing.

It was a challenging moment wrestling with my feelings and God’s prompting. I almost didn’t follow through, but when I got home and reflected on what happened, tears welled up in my eyes. Not because it was about Bryan, but because I recognized that I had heard God’s voice. It turned out to be the sweetest day ever, and I’ll never forget it. The fact that this time, I obeyed God left my heart satisfied and fulfilled.

Reflecting on this, I recalled moments in my life when I heard God’s voice but stubbornly dismissed it as just my thoughts. Back in my first job, I had a vision of my manager and supervisor entering into a business venture that would end in a fight, breaking their friendship. It seemed odd at the time because they were close. Fast forward eight years, after moving to a different job, I reconnected with my former supervisor. When I asked about the manager, I learned that my vision had come true. They had indeed started a business together, but it ended in a dispute, leading to the dissolution of their friendship.

It was a moment of realization for me as I remembered the voice and the vision from my past. I wondered if things could have been different if I had shared those insights with the people involved. It struck me that the Lord had been trying to communicate with me all along, and I had been avoiding it. This time, however, I was glad that I had the courage to convey what God wanted me to say.

As for Bryan, I questioned whether the connection I felt with him was for a purpose. Was I meant to understand and share in his feelings? Was he in need of love or friendship? I couldn’t be certain. The initial thoughts I had when I first saw him at the Front desk resurfaced: ‘What are you doing here?’

While I believe in Bryan’s abilities, I also sensed that there might be greater opportunities for him elsewhere, though I couldn’t pinpoint where. My prayers are with him, hoping that he’ll recognize his potential soon. When I shared those words with him, I could see the impact as he had teary eyes. I genuinely wanted to hug him, but instead, I entrusted that to God through my prayers.

BRYAN OLIVER

There was this moment when Megan and I struck up a friendship with one of the bellmen at the hotel. Bryan happened to walk by, visible through a glass wall from the store. Without thinking, I blurted out, ‘Oh, my Bryan.’ Megan and the bellman shot me teasing looks. Oops, I hadn’t intended to spill my thoughts. My embarrassment turned my face as red as a tomato.

When Bryan looked my way, his smile… oh, it was something else. It was the first time I had seen him light up so genuinely. It seemed like he enjoyed what he heard. In my head, I thought, “Dang it! I know I can make you happy; I just can’t seem to do it.” Overall, his smile was a captivating blend of warmth, sincerity, and the kind of charm that stuck in my mind.

“He’s smiling,” Megan exclaimed, genuinely taken aback. It was a rare sight, considering Bryan’s usual demeanor—serious and quiet. I found myself nodding in agreement.

My curiosity about him only deepened. I often wondered about his mindset, wanting to delve into the principles and views that shaped his life. Would there ever be an opportunity for us to engage in a meaningful conversation? He seemed like the kind of person who harbored depth, and those kinds of conversations were right up my alley. There’s something undeniably appealing about mysterious guys; their puzzling nature leaves us, ladies, intrigued and eager to unravel the mysteries of their thoughts.

DAVID

After a long day at work, eagerly anticipating my bed, I opened the door to a familiar voice exclaiming, ‘Surprise.’ It was David. I hugged him tightly, unable to hold back my tears, saying, ‘I miss you.’ It had been 8 months, and as we embraced, I realized this is my home; he is my home. I missed my husband so much.

David brought me some branded bags and clothes, but I reassured him he didn’t have to. Having him here with me was already something to be grateful for. Excitedly, he shared some good news, ‘Babe, I’ll be staying here for good. No more working abroad.’

Overwhelmed with happiness, I responded, ‘I am so happy to hear that, Babe.’ Tears continued to fall. I had struggled with my emotions during his absence, feeling a distance in our connection. Even though I knew I loved him wholeheartedly, I couldn’t forgive myself for being attracted to someone else. Now, with him here, I felt confident that we could work through the challenges in our relationship

The night felt endless, and as we settled into bed, my mind was in turmoil. “Are you okay, babe? Is something bothering you?” he asked. “I’ll tell you tomorrow; just have a good rest tonight, okay?” I responded. I felt the need to be honest with my husband. Tomorrow, I would tell him about Bryan.

Unable to sleep, I glanced at my husband peacefully asleep beside me. I got up quietly, made my way to the desk, and reached for my journal.

Are you thinking about me? Because I do.
I can't believe it myself.
Why have I fallen for you,

As I closed my journal, I realized it was wet with tears falling from my eyes. Why am I even crying over this? I think I’m just overwhelmed with all the emotions from the past months. I prayed and was honest with God about my feelings because I know He will never judge me; He understands. I asked for wisdom to do the right thing.

‘God, give me the courage to tell my husband,’ I prayed. ‘I’ll try my best to move on from these feelings for Bryan. Please remove these emotions and let me focus on my relationship with David. I still wish Bryan the best in life.’ I prayed. My eyes and brain are tired.

Returning to bed, I heard my phone chime and wondered what it was at this hour. It’s 12 midnight. A notification from my Facebook account caught my attention.

Chapter 8: Silent Connections

Opening up to Gabriela about my feelings regarding Bryan and Megan during our shift felt somewhat relieving. I mentioned my plan to talk to Megan about it, but given her recent breakup, I understand she has a lot on her plate. I still intend to discuss my feelings with her when the time is right.

In the meantime, I’ve been actively avoiding Bryan. I even adjusted my daily water intake goal to 2000ml so I wouldn’t have to use the bathroom and pass by the lobby. I refrain from looking at the front desk, opting to walk straight to my destination and back. I recognize this might come off as rude, Sorry, I have my reasons.

There are instances when I catch him looking at me from the corner of my eye. I remind myself to return to my original path and not engage in any unnecessary glances. I feel conflicted because I don’t want to appear mean, but I have to try to get him out of my head. They say, “out of sight, out of mind,” so perhaps if I don’t see him, I’ll eventually forget about him.

I’ve walked through the lobby a few times, and I’m not sure if saying hi or not bothers him. Occasionally, I get the sense that it does. He tries to make eye contact, and there are moments when I catch him looking at me. I choose to pretend I don’t notice, questioning the point of acknowledging it. Is he sensing that I might have feelings for him? Does he feel the same way, or am I just imagining things? It’s like we’re having a silent conversation through our eyes.

At times, I wonder if he’s aware that I’m married. Has he ever taken the time to find out? Does he even know my name, considering he’s never asked? All these questions, the uncertainty, and the constant overthinking can be overwhelming at times. This guy! Driving me crazy! It’s cute though.

Staring Contest

As I continue working, I decide to clean up the shelves. I don’t know where this dust coming from. It gets dirty every day. The shelves of souvenirs are somewhat get a view from the Front Desk. I didn’t bother to look at that side, I don’t even know if he is still there. He might get home.

No, I’m wrong. I accidentally looked that way. He’s there, ready to go home. He opens the door from their office, and I look at him – he’s already looking at me. Our eyes lock. Okay, what’s this? Staring contest? He continues staring for a few minutes, and I stare back. What’s strange is that neither of us smiles. In that moment, it feels like we’re communicating with our eyes. He then looks away first and leaves.

What just happened? I wondered what he was thinking while staring at me. I know men tend to gaze at women, but that look felt like more than just casual staring. As I stared back, these words echoed in my mind: I want to care for you, boldly. But I couldn’t. I am sorry that I couldn’t express it. I am sorry that I am taken. Do you feel the same? Do you also like me?

When he’s sad or having a bad day, I want to ask if he is okay. I want his day to be better, and I want him to smile if that’s the only thing I can do to make his day. But I know I can’t. If I express it, I don’t want him to fall for me, because I know, and maybe he knows too, that I couldn’t reciprocate that. That’s why I’ve decided to admire him from afar simply.

What scares me more is if he feels the same. Again, I don’t want to break his heart. I am more worried about what he might feel for me. I don’t want to be the reason for anyone’s heartbreak. I’d rather feel the pain myself than cause it to others.

The truth is, there were times I felt he might have similar feelings for me. Who knows? If he does, he might have already acted on it. But he hasn’t. Sometimes, I also sense that because he knows I am already taken, that’s why he’s not acting on it. I could also sense that he is a man of integrity, and maybe that’s one thing that has drawn me to him. I feel emotions at times, instincts, gut feelings that he might have something for me as well. But also, I might be delusional. Am I going crazy now? I don’t know. Okay, Lindsey, stop overthinking. You’re being delusional.

This is the hardest part—when things are left unsaid.

Night Shift

I worked with Elena during this night shift. Of course, I shared it with her. She’s my soul sister, and I feel comfortable telling her these things because I have a feeling she understands me. However, there are times she says that she doesn’t like Bryan’s vibe. I understand; that everyone has a different view of people. I wish I had that look at him, though, so I could easily move on from these forbidden feelings. But no, I still admire him. Is this weird? We don’t even talk, like a real conversation. But I admire everything about him. Of course, there’s a part of me that hopes he also feels the same, but a stronger part hopes he won’t. Lindsey Althea, you’re absolutely weird.

As I got home, that staring moment stayed in my head. I wish I could ask him what that was supposed to mean. Isn’t it normal for him to look at people like that? Maybe I’m not the only one he looks at like that. Perhaps it’s just his normal gaze, so I shouldn’t give it any meaning. Right, Lindsey? That’s right. I know I’m weird talking to myself at times. But with Bryan, I’ve been talking to myself more often. I hope this won’t make me a crazy woman.

Resting in the glow of an unexpected moment, I can’t deny the flutter of joy that lingers after our brief staring contest. It’s strange and unspoken, yet I feel flattered like a secret connection exists. It’s not a romantic love, but pure and genuine care. I sense he wants to care for me, though he might not know how.

This unexpected emotion catches me off guard. It’s a simple joy, wishing him a great life from afar, without expecting anything in return. I can love someone without needing them to reciprocate. My heart is content tonight, grateful for this unique connection that makes me feel alive and youthful. I hope he’s doing well, and I can’t help but wonder if he’s replaying our silent conversation in his mind as well.

As I dwell on these positive emotions, my thoughts shift to Megan. Tomorrow, we’re scheduled to work the night shift together, and I can’t help but feel a sense of awkwardness about facing her. I continue to pray for her well-being, knowing that the pain of a breakup isn’t something easily brushed aside. The night ahead will bring uncertainties, but I hope that she finds strength and solace amid the challenges.

Chapter 7: Echoes of Emotions

Finding people with whom you can share your soul is rare, and Megan, Elena, and Gabriela are true gems. With them, I can be myself without pretensions or the need to try hard for acceptance – just love. I’m incredibly thankful that God sent them into my life.

Sharing life with them feels like being part of a family. Megan, despite her strong personality, has a sweetness to her that wasn’t initially obvious but she has become more expressive lately. Working the morning shift today, I eagerly await Megan’s arrival for her next shift. We’ve grown accustomed to being together almost every day, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the head office decides to separate us one day. There’s a feeling I might be the one transferred (again) – perhaps they’ve noticed our playful antics on camera. We work hard, but there’s joy in being a bit crazy sometimes. Despite my quiet exterior, I’m truly a bit of a crazy one as well.

As Megan enters the store, I sense something is wrong. Her eyes are puffy, swollen from crying – she’s not okay. I wait until some customers leave, then gently ask, “You’re not okay, Megan. What’s wrong?”

“It’s over, we’re not together anymore. He’s moving out this week,” she replies, her tone filled with anger and hurt. I don’t pry into the details. Instead, I ask, “Do you need a hug?” and embrace her tightly, silently praying for the Lord to comfort her and provide strength to face this heartbreak.

She shares more about how her boyfriend decided to end things, stating he doesn’t feel love for her anymore. Even though she sounds calm, the pain in her words echoes a silent scream. All I can do is listen and let her pour out her heart. As I listen, her pain becomes mine, and my heart breaks alongside hers.

In Megan’s words of hurt and anger towards her boyfriend, I sense a deep-seated feeling of not being enough. She silently questions if there’s something wrong with her, causing this heartbreak to happen once more.

Amidst our workloads, I make an effort to ensure she’s okay. I try to lighten the atmosphere, making her laugh to momentarily forget the pain. Megan will be working with Elena tonight, and I assure her that I’m available to hang out after her shift. So, we decide to grab a bite at McDonald’s.

Megan’s Past Relationship and Heartbreak

Megan’s past relationship was hauntingly familiar – her ex-boyfriend, like the current one, cited a lack of love and intentionally cheated on her. To make matters worse, he blackmailed her with intimate photos when he wanted to exploit her. Before sharing my thoughts, I make sure Megan is open to my opinion and advice. Being someone who doesn’t give unsolicited advice, I respect that some people just need someone to listen. As Megan agrees, I begin to speak my mind.

I emphasize that whatever she has with Derek is okay, and their friendship is great. However, if she allows me, I would advise her to put that on hold. While it’s her choice whether to pursue a deeper relationship with him, in my mind, I hope she doesn’t. I’m not 100% okay with it. Asking Megan to engage in intimate activities while he’s in a relationship is completely off.

The Prayer

As I prepare for bed, sleep avoids me, burdened by the weight of Megan’s heartbreaking revelations. Despite appearing strong and composed while listening and offering advice, the depth of my emotional response remains hidden. Only God truly knows how it affects me.

Reflecting on my past experiences, I recall moments from my youth when I didn’t feel enough. I chased a guy, even going so far as to buy prepaid loads for him to respond to my texts. I was the only one with feelings, and the experience was less than pleasant. Despite this, I chose to remain friends with him. However, the feeling of being unwanted lingers. He occasionally messages me to borrow money, debts that are never repaid. After a few instances, I finally learned to say no. Establishing boundaries is a crucial lesson I’ve gleaned from life. We mustn’t allow others to mistreat or take advantage of us.

Considering Megan’s situation, I understand she might do anything for her boyfriend, even if she suspects he has someone else. She may still be willing to accept him back. I have a sense of the emotions she might be, but who am I to judge? I hope she learns valuable lessons from this experience

Sitting on my bed, I find solace in prayer:

May she understand that she doesn’t need a man or anyone else to feel loved and accepted because she already is. You loved her from the very beginning. Let this situation draw her closer to You, the love she has longed for. Also, teach her to love herself enough by setting boundaries. That she’ll know ho to say ‘No’ for the ones that don’t benefits her. When she understands this, I believe she will get out from this situation stronger than before.”

Moved by this prayer, I rise and grab my guitar. The song ‘Hungry (Falling on my knees) echoes in my mind, and as I strum, I feel a profound peace, a peace that Jesus alone can provide. While singing, I remember Megan in my prayers and worship, asking the Lord to touch her in a special way. May He grant her peace as she sleeps through the night, and to all the brokenhearted, I pray that they find the peace they long for.

I’ll be working the afternoon shift with Gabriela, while Megan covers the morning shift. I spent my morning engaged in household chores, accompanied by a comforting acoustic playlist. “Hi, girl! Good afternoon. How are you feeling?” I greeted her with a hug. “I’m not okay. My boyfriend is being a jerk,” she replied. She shared that after their friendly breakup, they were still communicating fine. Today, however, he responded rudely, expressing a desire to have nothing to do with her and using hurtful words.

The workday unfolded, with Megan informing others about the breakup. The bellmen and drivers got wind of it, and I couldn’t help teasing them about the possibility of Megan finding someone new. While I saw potential in certain connections, I felt it was crucial for Megan to prioritize healing before jumping into a new relationship.

Observing her behavior, I could discern the pain beneath her smiles. I suggested, half in joke, that the company should offer a special leave called “breakup heal,” allowing her to take time off to process the pain. Despite the circumstances, we found moments of laughter amid the seriousness. I playfully warned Megan, “I know there are a lot of guys out there, but please, not my Bryan, okay?” It was said in a joke, but there was an underlying sincerity—I wasn’t ready for them to be together, not yet. She could choose anyone else, just not him, at least for now. I repeated this sentiment, both during a serious conversation and a casual one at McDonald’s, and each time, Elena and Megan laughed. It was a joke, but a joke with a touch of truth.

But her response caught me off guard. “Well, he already knows that I am single,” she said. I was left speechless, anticipating her next words. “I was buying pastries at the café for the drivers and telling them how we broke up, and Bryan was there too, waiting for his food,” she added.

I felt a small sting in my heart. I had to check myself again. You’re not allowed to get hurt. You don’t own him, and you have no right, I told myself. But it also pained me that Megan didn’t consider what I had mentioned multiple times—not him, not yet.

The pain persisted when, later in the day, I found myself wondering how long Bryan had been working at the hotel. Megan went to ask one of the bellmen, who then asked Bryan, and he returned with her question if they wanted to exchange numbers.

Apparently, he’s been working there for five years. I was surprised because I haven’t seen him there before. I thought he was new, but then I came to the realization that I wasn’t really paying attention to people there.

But the highlight of it all, right before my eyes, they exchanged numbers. The bellman even commented, “You guys would make a good couple.” telling Megan.

I found myself alone for a few hours at work before Gabriela arrived. The rain poured hard, creating the perfect backdrop for the unexplainable pain I was experiencing. I was caught in a state of “I shouldn’t feel this” and “why am I feeling this?” I wanted to put a stop to these emotions. I should be focusing on my marriage, not on this. David had been busy with work, and our conversations were always brief, even our video calls sometimes ended with one of us falling asleep.

In the midst of these emotions for Bryan, I wished fervently for it to stop. I wanted to end it instantly, but I knew it would require a lot of self-talk and mental effort. What was wrong with me? I couldn’t recognize myself. I knew I would never do anything to hurt my husband. I loved him, but this was a real struggle.

“Hi babe, I miss you too. How are things there? Workload okay? Are you eating on time?” I ask enthusiastically. I genuinely miss him. I know deep down I love my husband. I am blessed to have David in my life.

My husband is a computer whiz, working as a software developer for a family-owned business. They treat him like one of their own. Flashback to our fantastic Bahamas honeymoon three years ago, all thanks to his awesome bosses. Sure, he had a bit of work to do, but we squeezed in tons of fun.

His job sometimes takes him abroad, and right now, he’s in the USA for training and seminars. It’s been six months, and there’s a chance it might go on for another 3-6 months. I’m not a fan of long-distance relationships, but we talked it through, and I’m supporting him all the way.

After some work and life chit-chats, I feel sad that I can’t hug him. He’s having a hard time, mostly missing me, and I miss him too. He mentioned this might be the last time he works abroad. He wants to settle in one place, building our family. Babies – the thought excites me. I envision holding a baby, staring at them all day. Oh my goodness!

Megan, our style icon, looks amazing in a dark blue cropped top that shows off her shape with skinny jeans. She’s rocking silver and white sparkly sandals, turning heads and catching everyone’s eye.

I went for a simple yet stylish look, opting for a black blouse and ripped jeans with that cool worn-out style. To add some flair, I slipped into comfy red flat Keds, bringing in a splash of color and a laid-back vibe. To complete the look, I threw on a small red shoulder bag, perfectly matching my shoes and pulling the whole outfit together.

It’s been a while since I used lipstick and eyeliner. Generally, I’m not really into makeup. I wish I was, but I just don’t have the patience to do it every day. So, my quick fix is lipstick and brown eyeliner. It’s just to appear a bit more put together, so people won’t be startled by my natural face and the bags under my eyes.

The three ladies sparkle like diamonds. I’m enjoying this. It’s going to be a blast. We kicked off our night at a bar-restaurant, and guess what? It was karaoke night! Elena nudged the singer, hinting that I can sing, and then she sweetly asked me to give it a go with those irresistible puppy eyes. Unable to resist her adorable plea, I agreed. Opting for a cheerful tune, I went with “Dancing Queen.”

At the bar, there was a waiter glancing at Megan and another at Gabriela. I’ve got this protective instinct for Gabriela since she’s the youngest and still a minor in our group. I’m careful with her, not letting her have any alcohol. Even though I don’t drink myself, I ordered a Virgin Piña Colada. I mean, her parents trust us with her, so we should be responsible, right? Our night continued as we headed to another bar with a private room reserved for karaoke. We rented the place for two hours, and this time around, Megan, Gabriela, and I ordered for coke, while Elena enjoyed her glass of wine. We took turns singing, dancing to the beats, and having a great time.

Throughout the night, Elena kept expressing her gratitude for organizing the hangout. She mentioned how much she needed it and couldn’t thank me enough. It was evident she was having a blast! Elena went to order another glass of wine, I think it was her fourth by now. When she returned, she brought a guy, introducing him as her cousin. We exchanged greetings, although I had a feeling he might not be a cousin. For some reason, I couldn’t shake that thought, but I decided to let it be.

We continued singing, and towards the end, Megan and I chose a Christian song called “What a Beautiful Name” for a duet to conclude the night. The song beautifully expresses the power and wonder of Jesus’ name. I felt a deep sense of purpose in that moment. Building relationships with them had been my initial step, with the ultimate goal of introducing my faith to them as time goes on. Deep down, I believe it’s essential for us to help each other draw closer to the ONE who created us. After all, we are all created by Him and for Him, and serving one another is our shared calling.

As we prepared to settle our bill, the bartender surprised us by letting us know that it had already been paid. Elena’s cousin had taken care of it. Although he didn’t stay with us in the room, choosing to remain at the bar, he generously covered the expenses. We expressed our gratitude, recognizing the kindness in his gesture. May God bless him for his thoughtful generosity.

BACK TO WORK

In our Whatsapp group, we all shared messages of appreciation. Workdays were pretty routine, and this time around, I was paired with Gabriela most of the time. We had a blast, laughing together and enjoying our shifts. While I might seem reserved to some, the right people know I can be quite the character.

Gabriela often looked at me like I was her mother. Once, a hotel employee tried to get her number, and she silently mouthed to me for help. I stepped in and told the guy, “You know there are cameras everywhere here, and we’re not allowed to exchange numbers during work hours.” His face immediately turned angry, and he left the store. He tried again in the afternoon, but Gabriela informed him, “You know I’m 17.” The guy responded with a dismissive “So what?” even though he looked like he was in his 20s. Regardless, I felt a strong urge to protect Gabriela, guiding her like a mother would.

We had some discussions, and I advised her to prioritize her studies because love life can come later—it’s the easier part. Gabriela is a smart kid. At one point, I told her, “I think you’ll be a director one day,” and I encouraged her to come back to me in the future if that ever happens, just to say I was right. 🙂

I feel rejuvenated when I’m around her. It warms my heart when she sweetly confessed that I’m her favorite, eagerly anticipating our shifts together. I teased her about it, and although she was hesitant to admit it at first, we shared plenty of laughter during our work hours. My craziness adds to the joyful vibe, making our time together even more enjoyable.

During the times we worked together, I gradually opened up to Gabriela about Bryan. I shared how I felt connected to him, and it was Gabriela who brought up the idea of soul mates and having a platonic love. Despite expressing my admiration for him, and clarifying that it wasn’t romantic, I just couldn’t comprehend the depth of my feelings for him. It seemed like there was a unique and profound connection that went beyond the conventional understanding of relationships.
